Visual artists Anna Estarriola and Johanna Ketola create a series of performances in different locations of the public spaces of Munich by staging camouflaged situations, or in cinematographic terms scenes, that melt into the every day life of the city. The body of the piece consists of the presence of approximately fifty Munich citizens as performers. By working in the public space, the artists include also the by-passers into the scenes as potential audience, actors or both. In the piece the city is understood as the scenery and the people who inhabit it as part of it.

The scenes, that are based in four colors and common human behavior patterns, are made also into a short film. The film will be screened during the opening hours of Do Tank in Muffathalle. The audience is able to follow a double existence of the work; one layer is taking place on the screen and the other one in the actual city scape. The scenes are visible in the movie and can be experienced on the locatios as well.

WITHIN proposes, through subtle visual and dramaturgical impact, sensitivity and contemplative attitude toward one's surroundings. The project underlines the relevance of the latent and the everyday-life-like qualities of human existence. The observation of this might include boredom, patience and being perplexed, yet consist of moments of surprise and beauty.

WITHIN is part of the program DO TANK in the frame of SPIELART Festival Munich 2011.

HOW TO TAKE PART IN THE PERFORMANCE AS AUDIENCE - GENERAL USER MANUAL

The artists invite and challenge you to take part in the observation of the everyday surroundings of the city of Munich by attending some or all of the four 'Within' performances. To make you as an audience as comfortable as possible, the artists have created guidelines, so to say "a general Within user manual". If you wish to attend 'Within', please take a look at the friendly remarks that you find below.

* The duration of each performance is approximately 1,5 hours. Audience is welcome at any moment of the time span of the performance.

* The audience is encouraged to keep their eyes open and be sensitive to the surrounding/location they are guided to. The audience is also encouraged to have a patient mindset and to confront any feelings of boredom with a curious spirit.

* The audience is encouraged to make themselves comfortable by treating themselves well with a cup of coffee or tea to accompany the experiencing the work/the surrounding. Depending on the performance spot, you are invited to find a comfortable spot for yourself to sit, but also wander around the location.

* The audience members are also invited to avoid appearing like audience members that have come to see a performance, but instead encouraged to "camouflage" themselves to melt into the surrounding of the city as an "anybody". This can be approached in a very relaxed manner and do not need any preparation; you are invited to be just yourself, but asked to avoid as much as it is possible showing to the others that you are following a performance. This is a secret we share with you.

All the performances are free of charge.
